About Oregon, U.S., Adoptions and Name Changes, 1876-1918

An 1864 Oregon statute began requiring judges to report name changes and adoptions. The reports are published biennially, and this collection includes reports dating from 1876 through 1919. Records include the date, present name, former name, adoptive parents, and the county.

The state of Oregon also maintains a voluntary registry to facilitate adoption research for eligible parties. More information on adoption research in Oregon can be found on the Oregon Department of Human Services website.

Oregon, U.S., City Directories

This database is a collection of city directories for various years and cities in the U.S. state of Oregon. City directories are great sources for locating people in a particular place and time. Generally a city directory will contain an alphabetical list of its citizens, listing the names of the heads of households, their addresses, and occupational information. Sometimes a spouse's name may be listed following that of the head of household. In addition, the date of death for individuals who died in the previous year, the names of partners of firms, and forwarding addresses of people who moved to another town may also be listed. Other parts of a directory include a business directory, street directory, and governmental directory.
