About Oklahoma, U.S., Indian Land Allotment Sales, 1908-1927

Land distributed to Native Americans through government allotment (such as via the Dawes Commission) came with many restrictions governing its sale or lease. An act passed in May 1908 removed many of these restrictions and authorized the Secretary of the Interior to remove others. In particular, this allowed Indians to sell or lease, and incoming settlers to obtain, allotment lands.

This series contains records of actions taken on applications for removal of restrictions. Records include the applicant's name, enrollment number, tribe, degree of Indian blood, address, legal description of the land to be sold, date petition was filed, date approved, and date of sale.

Oklahoma and Indian Territory, U.S., Land Allotment Jackets for Five Civilized Tribes, 1884-1934

In 1893 the Dawes Commission became responsible for negotiating agreements with the Five Civilized Tribes to dissolve tribal governments and allot land to each tribal member. This collection includes the allotment records for people on the final membership rolls.
