Historical Context

From the middle of the 19th century and continuing into the 20th century, many people left Sweden, Norway and Denmark to make a new life in the United States and elsewhere, largely for economic reasons. During this period of Scandinavian emigration, about 1.3 million people left Sweden and made the voyage abroad. These registers, maintained by local police services at the main ports of embarkation, provide details of those who left, where they left from and their intended place of arrival. Many of the passengers travelled beyond the port of arrival, settling in other cities and countries so be sure to check the image for intended destinations to see where they may have eventually established a new home.
